Dr. Coy C. Carpenter was the dean of the School of Medicine from 1936 to 1967. He guided the school through the transition from a two-year to a four-year program and the move from old Wake Forest to Winston-Salem.
In 1951, Wake Forest President Harold W. Tribble said of Dr. Carpenter, "What has been accomplished at our medical school is due more to the fortitude, courage, and ability of the dean than to any other person."
Severely limited resources prompted many to describe Dr. Carpenter's mission as impossible. But his inspired and inspiring leadership paid off, and a grateful community and region was soon referring to what is now Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center as "The Miracle on Hawthorne Hill."
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is pleased to acknowledge those who provide for its future by recognizing them alongside the leader most responsible for its improbable beginnings.
